How does Smart Fit mode work?
Smart Fit automatically analyzes the aspect ratio of each image and compares it with the container cell. If the aspect ratio is similar (difference < 0.4), it uses light Cover mode with minimal cropping. If the aspect ratio differs significantly (e.g., portrait image in landscape cell), it automatically switches to Contain mode to display the entire image, avoiding cropping important parts like heads or feet. This is the recommended mode as it balances aesthetics with content preservation.
When should I use Contain vs Cover?
Use CONTAIN when: you have mixed portrait and landscape images, image content is important and you don't want to lose any part (e.g., people photos, documents), images contain text that needs to be fully readable. Use COVER when: all images have similar aspect ratios, aesthetics matter more than detailed content, you want collages without gaps/borders, images are textures or backgrounds where position doesn't matter. Use SMART (default) when: unsure what to choose, want the tool to intelligently decide for you.
How does auto layout detect image orientation?
The algorithm automatically calculates each image's aspect ratio: if > 1.3 it's Landscape (wide), if < 0.75 it's Portrait (tall), otherwise Square. Then it analyzes the entire set: if 2 portrait images → stack vertically, if 2 landscape → arrange horizontally, if mixed → larger aspect ratio gets more space. For 3-6 images, it creates optimal layouts based on orientation counts. For 7+ images, it dynamically calculates grid: wide images → fewer columns, tall images → more columns. This algorithm works automatically in the background - you don't need to do anything.
How is smart mosaic different from the old version?
Old mosaic created random regions without considering aspect ratios, resulting in portrait images being cropped horizontally or landscape images being distorted. Smart mosaic: 1) Sorts images by aspect ratio for better placement, 2) Selects the most suitable space for each image ratio (landscape → wide space, portrait → tall space), 3) Calculates region size based on actual aspect ratio (landscape → wide, portrait → tall, square → square), 4) Has 70-100% randomness for artistic effect without excessive distortion. Result is a more beautiful, harmonious mosaic with less cropping.
How do I avoid cropping faces in photos?
Use Smart mode (default) or Contain. Smart mode automatically detects when aspect ratios differ significantly and switches to contain to prevent cropping. If still cropping, manually switch to Contain - this mode guarantees 100% of the image is displayed without any cropping. Additionally: 1) Use Auto Layout instead of Grid if images have very different ratios, 2) Increase spacing to give each image more room, 3) Choose canvas size appropriate for image ratios (e.g., tall canvas for many portrait images).
Does grid layout adjust for image orientation?
Grid layout currently creates uniform cells, but when used with Smart fit mode, it still handles intelligently: portrait images in landscape cells will use contain to display fully instead of being cropped at top/bottom. If you want a more flexible grid, use Auto Layout - it automatically creates dynamic grids with different-sized cells suited to images. Or use Mosaic for maximum freedom in size and position.

How should I choose canvas size for many portrait images?
For many portrait (tall) images, choose a tall or square canvas instead of wide: Instagram post: 1080×1080 or 1080×1350, Facebook story: 1080×1920, Print: 2400×3000 or 3000×4000. A tall canvas allows portrait images to arrange more naturally with less cropping. If you must use a wide canvas with portrait images: 1) Use Auto Layout (it will arrange in multiple columns), 2) Choose Contain or Smart fit mode, 3) Increase columns in Grid layout (5-6 columns), 4) Accept background borders to show complete images.
Can canvas auto-adjust to image ratios?
Yes. Open the Canvas Size Preset dropdown and choose 'Auto-fit to photos' — the tool computes the average aspect ratio of your selected images and picks dimensions for you: many portrait photos (avg < 0.8) get a tall 1080×1350 canvas, many landscape photos (avg > 1.25) get a wide 1920×1080 canvas, and balanced sets get a square 1200×1200 canvas (all capped at 4096px). You can still type exact pixel values afterward; editing the width or height switches the preset back to Custom. This removes the manual average-aspect-ratio math the older version required.
What size should my collage be for Instagram or print?
Use the Canvas Size Preset dropdown for one-click platform-ready dimensions. Instagram feed square: 1080×1080. Instagram portrait (best feed reach): 1080×1350. Instagram/Facebook Story and Reels: 1080×1920. Facebook cover: 1200×630. Pinterest pin: 1000×1500 (2:3). For print at 300 DPI, an A4 sheet is 2480×3508 px and US Letter is 2550×3300 px; a 4×6 photo is 1200×1800 px and an 8×10 is 2400×3000 px. As a rule, multiply the inches by 300 to get pixels for crisp printing.
Should I export as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and when should I raise quality?
Choose JPEG for photo-heavy collages headed to social media — it gives the smallest files at quality 85–92, which is the sweet spot before artifacts show. Choose PNG when you need a transparent background (set the background to a light color or export with no fill), pixel-perfect edges, text, or logos — PNG is lossless but larger. Choose WebP for the best size-to-quality ratio on the modern web; it supports both lossy and transparency. Raise the quality slider toward 100 for print or large 4096px canvases where detail matters; keep it around 90 for web to save bandwidth.
Why do some images have background borders in the collage?
Background borders appear when using Contain mode or Smart mode (when aspect ratios differ significantly). This is the way to display the entire image without cropping content. If you don't want borders: 1) Switch to Cover mode (but images will be cropped), 2) Choose background color matching image tone (white, black, or average color), 3) Crop images to same aspect ratio before uploading, 4) Use a different layout better suited to image ratios. Borders aren't errors, but a trade-off to preserve image content.
How do I know which layout suits my images?
Try each layout and check preview: AUTO: best for most cases, automatically optimizes by orientation. Suitable when images have different ratios. GRID: good when you want order, uniformity, all images equally important. Suitable for albums, catalogs. MOSAIC: good for artistic look, creativity, want some images to stand out more. Suitable for posters, covers. Tip: if unsure, use Auto with Smart fit mode - this is the safest combination for all image types.
Does this tool use AI?
The tool uses smart algorithms to automatically analyze and process, but doesn't use AI/Machine Learning training models. The algorithm works based on mathematical rules: calculates aspect ratio, detects orientation, compares with container, decides fit mode, optimizes layout. Everything runs in browser, no server needed, no data collection. Advantages: fast, private, no internet needed after page load, stable results. Disadvantages: can't recognize faces or objects like true AI (may add in future versions).
