About Image Annotator
Image Annotator is a professional online tool for marking up screenshots and images. Highlight specific areas, add explanatory text, draw attention with arrows, or blur and redact sensitive data such as faces, emails, API keys, and account numbers before sharing.
With support for freehand drawing, arrows, text, rectangles, circles, highlights, callouts, and cover/redact boxes - plus PNG or JPG export with an adjustable quality slider - you can produce professional annotated images for bug reports, support tickets, documentation, tutorials, or social media. All processing happens in your browser, ensuring your images remain private and secure.
What types of annotations can I add?
You can add various types of annotations including:
- Freehand drawings for custom marks
- Arrows to point out important areas
- Text labels and captions
- Rectangles and circles for highlighting
- Highlight markers for emphasis
- Lines and callouts for detailed annotations
What image formats are supported?
Image Annotator supports all major image formats including JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP. You can export your annotated image as PNG (lossless, preserves transparency) or JPG (smaller file size, with an adjustable quality slider).
How do I blur or redact sensitive info in a screenshot?
Click 'Start Annotating' and pick the cover/redact marker from the toolbar. Draw an opaque box over any sensitive data - faces, email addresses, API keys, account numbers, or names - before you share the screenshot. The cover marker permanently hides what's underneath once you save, making it ideal for QA bug reports, support tickets, and compliance reviews.
Can I export at a specific format (JPG vs PNG)? Does it reduce quality?
Yes. After annotating, choose PNG or JPG in the export controls. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency - best for crisp screenshots and text. JPG is much smaller for email and tickets, and a quality slider (50-100%) lets you balance file size against fidelity. Annotations are drawn at full resolution, so PNG export adds no quality loss; only JPG below 100% applies compression.
Can I customize the colors and styles?
Yes! The marker.js 2 annotation tool provides extensive customization options including:
- Color selection for all annotation types
- Line width and style adjustments
- Font selection for text annotations
- Opacity controls for highlights
- And many more styling options

How do I use the annotation tool?
Simply upload your image and click 'Start Annotating'. The annotation editor will open, allowing you to:
1. Select the type of annotation from the toolbar
2. Draw or place your annotation on the image
3. Customize the color, size, and style
4. Add multiple annotations as needed
5. Click 'OK' or 'Save' when finished
Your annotated image will be ready for download immediately.
Can I edit my annotations after saving?
Yes! You can click 'Edit Again' to reopen the annotation editor and make changes to your image. However, once you download the image, the annotations become part of the image and cannot be edited separately.
Is there a limit on image size?
For optimal performance, we recommend images up to 10MB in size. Larger images may take longer to process but will still work in most cases. The tool will display images at a comfortable viewing size while maintaining full resolution for the final output.
Are my images stored on your servers?
No, all image processing happens locally in your browser using HTML5 Canvas technology. Your images are never uploaded to our servers, ensuring complete privacy and security. The annotation tool runs entirely client-side.
