Frequently asked questions

What is WPM (Words Per Minute)?

WPM is the standard measurement of typing speed. It's calculated by dividing the number of characters typed (including spaces) by 5, then dividing by the time in minutes. A word is standardized as 5 characters for consistency across different texts.

What's the difference between Raw WPM and Net WPM?

Raw WPM is your speed without considering errors, while Net WPM deducts errors from the calculation. Net WPM gives a more accurate representation of your actual typing proficiency.

What is a good typing speed?

Average typing speed is 40-50 WPM. Professional typists typically achieve 65-75 WPM. Advanced typists and programmers often reach 80+ WPM. However, accuracy is equally important - aim for at least 95% accuracy.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practice regularly with proper finger placement (touch typing), focus on accuracy over speed initially, use all ten fingers, maintain good posture, and take breaks to avoid fatigue. Consistent practice is key to improvement.

Are my typing records saved?

Yes, your typing records are saved locally in your browser using localStorage. Your data remains private and is never sent to any server. Clearing browser data will delete your records.

Which browsers and devices are supported, and do I need any permission?

The test runs in any modern browser - Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge - on desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. It uses only standard keyboard events, so no microphone, camera, location or special permission is ever requested. Nothing is installed and nothing leaves your device: the passage, your keystrokes and your saved records all stay in the browser via localStorage. You can even run it offline once the page has loaded.

How do I read Raw WPM, Net WPM and accuracy as this tool reports them?

This tool now counts every forward keystroke, so accuracy = (total keystrokes - total errors committed) / total keystrokes, and a typo you fix still counts as a committed error. Raw WPM = (total keystrokes / 5) / minutes; Net WPM = Raw WPM minus errors-per-minute. The results panel also shows Total keystrokes and Total errors so the numbers are auditable. Use Export CSV or Export JSON to save the full report (mode, difficulty, duration, raw/net WPM, real accuracy, correct/incorrect chars, total keystrokes, total errors, elapsed time, timestamp and the browser user agent) and attach it to a repair ticket or compare two keyboards side by side.

Is this the same as a hardware key-latency or rollover diagnostic?

No. This is a consumer typing-skill test that measures how fast and accurately a person types. It does not measure per-key actuation latency, debounce timing, N-key rollover or detect chattering/stuck keys at the hardware level - the browser only sees the final character events, not the switch electronics. For physical key faults (a key registering twice, not registering, or ghosting) use our Keyboard Tester instead. The two are complementary: confirm the hardware is healthy with the Keyboard Tester, then benchmark measured typing speed and export the session here for the device ticket.
