About Mute Video

This online tool removes audio from video files directly in your browser. Mute the whole clip or silence just one time range — ideal for stripping copyright-flagged music before posting to YouTube, Instagram or TikTok, killing camera mic noise, or prepping b-roll and footage for re-scoring. Video is copied losslessly without re-encoding, and all processing happens locally for complete privacy.

What video formats are supported?

You can upload MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, M4V and other common video formats. The output can stay in the same format as the input or be converted to MP4 or WebM.

Lossless stream-copy vs re-encode: what's the difference?

When the output format is 'Same as Input', the video stream is copied bit-for-bit (lossless, instant, no quality loss) and only the audio is touched. If you force a different container (MP4 or WebM), the video must be re-encoded (libx264 for MP4, VP9 for WebM) because you cannot copy an H.264 stream into a WebM container or a VP9 stream into MP4 — keep 'Same as Input' for true lossless output.

How do I mute just one part of the video?

Choose 'Mute a Time Range', then enter a start and end time (seconds like 12.5, or timecode like 00:01:30). Only that window is silenced while the rest of the dialogue and ambient audio is preserved — perfect for surgically removing a swear word, a mic bump, an off-camera comment, or a copyrighted song clip. The video stays lossless; only the audio is re-encoded.

Why does my MP4 use faststart?

For MP4 output we add -movflags +faststart, which moves the moov atom to the front of the file. This lets browsers and streaming players begin playback before the whole file is downloaded — essential for web-delivered video.

Will removing audio affect video quality?

No! The video stream is copied without re-encoding, preserving 100% original video quality. Only the audio track is removed, resulting in a smaller file size.

What's the difference between 'Remove Audio' and 'Keep Silent Track'?

'Remove Audio' completely removes the audio track (recommended for most cases). 'Keep Silent Track' replaces audio with silence - useful for some video players that require an audio track.

What is the file size limit?

Up to 4GB. Because the whole-file mute uses lossless stream-copy (no re-encoding), even multi-GB clips process quickly. Forcing a format change or muting a time range re-encodes and uses more memory, so very large files may be slower in the browser.

How much smaller will my video be?

File size reduction depends on the original audio bitrate. Typically, removing audio reduces file size by 5-20%. A video with high-quality audio will see larger savings.

Is my video file safe?

Absolutely! All processing happens directly in your browser using FFmpeg.wasm (WebAssembly). Your video file is never uploaded to any server. Everything stays private on your device.

Can I preview before downloading?

Yes! After muting, you can preview the silent video before downloading to verify the result.

How long does processing take?

Since we're only removing audio (not re-encoding video), processing is very fast - typically 5-15 seconds for a 5-minute video.
